In a landmark update to its long-term residency program, the United Arab Emirates has unveiled new benefits for Golden Visa holders, marking one of the most significant expansions of privileges since the visa’s inception.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), in collaboration with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), announced at GITEX Global 2025 that Golden Visa residents will now gain access to UAE consular services when travelling abroad — an unprecedented step that extends certain privileges previously reserved for Emirati nationals.

According to a statement released by the Emirates News Agency (WAM), the new measures have been described as “the first of their kind” and align with the ongoing “Year of Community” initiative, themed “Hand in Hand.” The move underscores the UAE’s commitment to global inclusivity and its recognition of long-term residents as integral members of the national community.

What the new benefits mean for Golden Visa holders

Golden Visa holders travelling abroad will now receive direct assistance from UAE embassies and consulates in the event of emergencies, lost passports, or travel complications.
If a passport is lost or damaged, holders can now obtain an electronic return document — valid for seven days — enabling their swift return to the UAE. The Ministry has also launched a 24/7 hotline for urgent inquiries and emergency support.

In addition, Golden Visa holders will now be included in national evacuation and emergency plans coordinated by UAE missions during crises such as natural disasters or political unrest in foreign countries.

The updated framework also covers repatriation and burial support for Golden Visa residents who pass away abroad. The new system simplifies the necessary consular procedures, ensuring efficient coordination between UAE authorities and the families of the deceased.

A reflection of the UAE’s global vision

Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the initiative demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to providing world-class support to its residents.

“This initiative reinforces the UAE’s position as one of the world’s most competitive nations for global talent,” he said. “It reflects our appreciation for the diverse individuals who contribute to the nation’s success and stability.”

Who qualifies for the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE Golden Visa — a 10-year renewable residency permit — was initially introduced for exceptional individuals who had made significant contributions to the country in various fields. Over time, eligibility has expanded, and the process has become more accessible.

Today, the Golden Visa is available to a wide range of individuals, including:

  • Investors and entrepreneurs

  • Scientists and researchers

  • Highly skilled professionals in sectors like medicine, engineering, and technology

  • Outstanding students and graduates

  • Creative talents such as content creators and artists

In Dubai, additional categories have recently been introduced, extending eligibility to teachers, gaming professionals, and nurses, among others.

A stronger, more inclusive future

This major policy update not only strengthens the UAE’s reputation as a global destination for innovation and opportunity but also enhances the sense of belonging among its long-term residents.
