AI-Driven Designs by Students to Illuminate Dubai Billboards

Selected artworks UAE students made would be upped on the billboards in Tilal Al Ghaf, Dubai, a celebration of creativity and technological advancement. These pieces are the result of Majid Al Futtaim’s ‘Dreamscapes: The ‘Architecture and Design for ‘AI for Visualising the Future of Dubai’ International design competition carried out together with the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority and the American University in Dubai.

Organisational learning in the form of a competition asked students to come up with expected future visions of Dubai up to 10-15 years in future, using advanced technology and artificial intelligence. Art cultures loved and celebrated in Dubai such as sustainability, community, placemaker, and technology, can be seen in the artworks.

According to the CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Properties, Ahmed El Shamy, such kind of competition helps promoting innovations from scratch. He noted that the students’ work presents how AI can revolutionize urban design work and give vision of future Dubai, being one of the smart cities in the world.

More than 150 AUD students were actively involved and made more than 250 works. The highest ranking work is ‘Tomorrow’s Horizons’ by Abbas AlObaidi which is a picture of Burj Khalifa against a backdrop of a bright sky that incorporates aspects of tradition and the future. AlObaidi was rewarded AED 15,000 for his idea that was adopted into the competition. Ahmed Al Salman with his ‘Intertwine’ named the second and got AED 10,000, and ‘Dynamic Quarters’ by Kareem Eid got the third place and AED 5,000.

Mr Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash the General of Dubai Culture pointed on possibilities of using AI in different fields and its potential to awaken generations. In this context, the competition can be considered as a response to the Dubai’s vision of how technology can be used in cultural and artistic projects.

Moreover, through the Al Futtaim, the documentary about the use and influence of the Artificial Intelligence in the design and architectures was also published, stressing on the combination of the Artificial Intelligence and human creativity.
