Dubai Introduces AI-Powered Radars to Curb Traffic Violations

Dubai officials have recently presented a new video-scanning AI radar system they believe can successfully combat six types of traffic violations effectively improving road safety and increasing the compliance levels with the standard traffic rules.

The radar system was developed by KTC International and among the offenses detected include, mobile phone usage while driving, sudden change of lanes, non-wearing of seat belt, improper lane usage, wrong tinted windshields and loud car horns among others.

Unfortunately, this license does not come cheap and if you wish to have its advanced features for even more precise enforcement, well then you will have to dig deeper into your pockets to make that possible.
In his interview held on 24th March, Eyad Al Barkawi, the General Manager of KTC International said that the radar uses artificial intelligence to analyze real-time footage as has not been experienced before. “That means it can distinguish between a seat belt and clothing even at night to prevent the correct enforcement,” according to Al Barkawi.

Besides the distracted driving, the radar also targets the aggressive behavior due to the possibility to identify violations of a driving lane. The respective offenses are reported to the authorities in the form of videos.

Addressing Road Traffic Noise and Illegally Applied Tinths

Currently operational after a 4-month test, the radar identifies vehicles emitting over permissible sounds especially those that are modified. It also searches for window tints with the laws and sends all violations to the traffic authorities for further action.

Improved protection for those who are on foot and flexibility

In this regard, the radar plays its part in ensuring that compliance for the movement of pedestrians is checked most especially at the cross-sections especially in the residential and the commercial zones. This aspect makes it is possible to relocate it every now and then, which is convenient when it comes to traffic work.

Effects and Other Findings

The AI radar has already influenced many drivers to change their behavior in a negative way. It has also labelled pathologic behaviours –the driver looking at a newspaper, or driving while handling two phones–.

Dubai Police with the assistance of KTC International has faith in the radar’s capacity towards making roads safe. The unique system offered in Dubai integrates with the exceptionally developed infrastructure to support organization of highways with ten lanes in number.
