DEWA Explores U.S. Advances in Solar and Battery Storage to Boost Dubai’s Clean Energy Goals

A detailed solar tour of California was paid by a DEWA delegation on October 26, 2024 led by the Managing Director and CEO, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer. The delegation visited Southern Power’s Garland Solar Facility and Clearway Energy Group’s Daggett Solar Site and explored the use of photovoltaic solar plants with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This visit was intended to ascertain the current proved strategies of integrating solar energy with the sophisticated storage systems that DEWA seeks to apply in Dubai’s renewable energy programs.

This visit was an outstanding opportunity to focus on this cooperation with US energy companies: DTC and Dubai strive to implement the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These programs aim for a zero-carbon electricity generation by the middle of the century, which is a big step toward declination of carbon footprint within the emirate of Dubai.

DEWA’s search for innovative solutions in its area of work complements Dubai’s grand energy initiatives, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The GWSP is slated to become the world’s largest integrated solar power plant with expected generation above 5000 MW by 2030. Al Tayer added that DEWA shall continue with its strategy of implementing value added solutions that would improve efficiency of energy and support sustainable electricity in Dubai.

“This visit helps promote DEWA’s mission to develop sustainable technologies in the electric sector and minimize the carbon emissions linked to power generation,” Al Tayer reiterated the organisation’s responsibilities in the implementation of Dubai’s energy diversification plans. By combining solar with storage, DEWA plans to achieve moving from the concept of occasional and small-scale clean energy interventions, to the large-scale, reliable, and constantly available energy from solar resources that will help Dubai sustain its efforts in this sphere for years to come.

The partnership between DEWA and global power industry players highlights Dubai’s commitment to transforming into a world-class city for sustainable power, and a model for future power initiatives.
