Dubai RTA Embraces LiDAR and Digital Twin Tech to Revolutionize Road Maintenance

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai utilizes LiDAR and digital twin technologies to quicken its smart city project by improving their road assets management. The Emirate-level road network will experience safer operation through a program announced on April 9, 2025 that improves maintenance at each stage of prevention, prediction, and proaction.

The Traffic and Roads Agency’s CEO Hussain Al Banna highlighted LiDAR technology because it brings performance and speed advantages reaching 300% beyond standard inspection methods. The smart and sustainable city leadership aims of Dubai find their foundation in this initiative.

The precision of LiDAR inspections reaches 95% and allows moving surveys between 30 to 100 km/h while traffic operates unimpeded. Each day the system surveys an incredible 80 kilometers of road while traditional methods covered only 3 kilometers each day. The system conducts effective remote inspections by scanning high-risk assets over 80 meters throughout major highway traffic signals and lighting poles and signage.

Digital twin platforms represent virtual copies of road infrastructure which provide updated information to enable better decisions in real time. The predictive maintenance planning of RTA relies on these tools which also enables both repair scheduling and accurate determination of the Assets Condition Index (ACI).

Al Banna stated that these smart solutions assist the organization to provide sustainable solutions that boost operational performance. Digital inspection systems offer several benefits that decrease manual inspection risks and establish stronger road safety protection for the population at large.

RTA implements this move as part of their digital transformation efforts to establish Dubai as a worldwide leader in smart infrastructure while developing itself as a global leader in transport management technology.
