Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has inaugurated two new bridges as part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Development Project. These two are among several bridges underway or planned for construction, to solve traffic congestion challenges in some of the most congested roads in Dubai by cutting the time it takes for vehicles to cross these bridges opened on 15 September 2024.
Project Overview
The first bridge which measures 601 meters provides a connection for eastward bound traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road with connections to Al Qusais and Deira. It has a carrying capacity of 3200 vehicles per an hour. The second one is measuring 664m has also connected Southbound from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street and Jebel Ali Port with the same passing capacity as the first bridge 3,200 vehicles per hour.
Significant Time Savings
The new bridges will mean rather considerable reductions in travelling time. For commute from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road going to Al Qusais and Deira, there will be 40% decrease in travel time, with only 12 minutes travel time from 20 minutes time in peak hours. Second bridge will provide free flow movement from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Al Yalayis Street toward Jebel Ali Port and the travel time will be reduced to 7 minutes from 21 minutes.
Schedule: Completion of the Particular Project and Its Further Prospective
At the time of writing, the project is 97% complete and has intended to complete all the remaining works and a 943 Meters Bridge connecting Garn Al Sabkha street with Al Asayel street in addition to all other works in no later than October 2024. This last stage will also help optimize interaction between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
The Garn Al Sabkha Intersection plan is just among the mega plans that RTA has in its strategic master plan meant to enhance strategic east-west corridors in Dubai to effectively address growth and development of the emirate.
