UAE Set for Autonomous Revolution: WeRide and Uber to Launch Robot Taxis in Abu Dhabi

WeRide and Uber have agreed on a new pilot project to use self-driving robot taxis in Abu Dhabi before the end of this year. As described in this novel partnership, WeRide’s autonomous vehicles will be incorporated with the Uber network hence, enabling riders to book a ride using the Uber application.

During its initial roll out, riders who request eligible trips may ask to be picked up in a WeRide autonomous automobile. Overall, this effort represents a new milestone to the development of the UAE’s roads to the acceptance of self-driving mobility.

Another early market player, WeRide that currently has the largest robotaxi fleet in the UAE, has been providing its services via the TXAI app and is the owner of the only national permission for self-driving cars in the nation, which was issued in July 23. This license enables WeRide to use and experiment with self-driving cars on public roads in every region of the country.

Another fulfillment of this trend is the partnership between WeRide founded by Tony Han and the city of Zhaoqing, which also aims to deliver on a global scale affordable, safe and environmental friendly mobility. In the same order of ideas, Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi also stressed the global vision for enhanced mobility and for it to be electrified, shared and self-driven.

It was signed during the signing ceremony with top management officials from both companies present including Andrew Macdonald from Uber, Senior Vice President of Mobility, and Business Operations and Hua Zhong, WeRide Senior Vice President. With this partnership, UAE reaffirms its commitment to becoming the technological hub and leading global supplier of autonomous transportation solutions.
