Over the past few years, Abu Dhabi is all set to further boost the status as one of most sought-after filming hubs globally from January 1 next year with a 50 percent rebate that has been offered on production and post-production expenses. This boost comes as a result of a 35 percent rebate policy that the UAE capital has enjoyed for a decade that sees film behemoths from across the world being drawn to the region.
The new structure of rebates was recently announced by the Abu Dhabi Film Commission and it concerns not only feature films but also reality TV and games shows, short films and other types of animated media. The goal of the plan is to foster investment, raise the status of Emirati talent, and showcase Emirati traditions. To encourage Emirati identity and Scripted production with local cast and crews, the main eligibility will be considered on points based system.
The performances will be evaluated using the point system that depends on the certain identified parameters. Additional lithographic rebates will be received by such projects scoring between 10 and 14 points as 2.5% above the base 35%, as well as scoring 85 and above will also be able to qualify for a total rebate of 50%. Pre-qualification factors include embodying UAE culture and using UAE cast and crew, and running a shooting or editing process primarily out of Abu Dhabi.
The basic limitation in fiscal support for eligible productions will also rise from that current ceiling while feature production can now go as high as $10 million in ADQPE. Furthermore, procedures for processing rebates have been made more efficient; whereby producers are to be reimbursed funds within 30 business days of issuing of certificates down from 60 business days.
It is expected that this move will lure big studios from Hollywood, Bollywood and the Arab world while nurturing home grown talents. Productions such as Mission: Out of the question – both Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Dune 2 have already filmed in Abu Dhabi and they capitalize on a stunning infrastructure to set up the scenes and unique stunning landscapes.
