Expo City Dubai to Allow Vehicles Under New Masterplan

Initially designed to be a new city free of car-dominated infrastructure that vest pedestrians, Expo City Dubai will open its automobile restricted master plan design to allow limited automobile access into the city. The area, approximately 3,5 sq km with the Al Wasl dome at its center, is in the process of changing its role from being a recreational area to a fully-functional new city capable of housing more than 35 000 residents, and hosting over 40 000 workers.

Physical Accessibility to support a Growing Population

Ahmed Al Khatib, CCDP (Chief Development and Delivery Officer at Expo City Dubai) stated that access had been made for the much-needed emergency, delivery, as well as private cars and it has been made functional benefiting from the sustainability goals at the same time. “The expo city is going to be a city with all types of infrastructure which require making ways accessible for some specific modes of transport,” he said. The modifed plan follows the model of ‘15-minute city,” and people should be able to get all necessities like medical services, stores and recreational facilities within walking distance from their workplace or home.

Sustainable Mobility – at the heart of every business activity

However, the vehicles are part of the city’s soft, low-emission mobility options within and around the city, especially embracing e-scooter services and Careem bikes. It has also integrated direct connection with the Dubai Metro enabling, the provision of public transport link to over sixty stations in Dubai. Al Khatib further explained that the masterplan is aimed at ‘walkability’ and climate comfort with active mobility to decrease travel time and improve the air quality of the community.

Key Projects in the Overhaul

The revamp includes:

  • A AED 1.75 billion mixed use development adjacent to the Dubai Exhibition Centre,

Number Of Employees:

  • A new global head quarter of DP World.
  • An expansion of an exhibition centre in Dubai.
  • A Vision Conforming to the Future of Urban Dubai

The new city plan is based on the general concept of the Dubai Walk Masterplan which can turn the Dubai emirate into a fully foot-loosom area all year round. This new master plan emphasizes Expo City’s importance in 2040 of Dubai’s Urban Planning aimed at enriching people’s lives through better connectivity and lowered ecological footprint.

The change in Expo City Dubai re-establishes its values, goals and visions focusing on innovation, sustainability, and the creation of a superior quality urban environment
