The transport arm of Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has commenced Phase II of the Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Improvement and Expansion Project as per directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This phase focuses on the improvement of the traffic of people and goods in Dubai, with the goal of turning it into the smartest city in the globe.
Due to authorities’ efforts to fully integrate ITS technology into the roads of Dubai, RTA aims to achieve its goal of adding ITS coverage to 100% of the city’s main roads by 2026. Total length of the network shall enhance from 480 km to 710 km. This will mean use of intelligent technologies and software such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) particularly cooperating ones (C-ITS) and putting into consideration benchmark cities.
According to H. E. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, the project’s implementation would lead to major enhancement in the overall management of the road network, traffic progression, and the duration it would take to respond to incidents. The implementation of new Variable Message Signs (VMS) along with smart applications associated with the condition of the road will ease the personal mobility and enable self-driving transport technologies.
The first phase involved the installation of 116 traffic surveillance cameras, 100 incident and vehicle counting units, 112 Lane Usage Monitors, 115 travel time/speed average measuring devices, and 17 weather sensors. It also erected 660 km of electric power lines and established a fibre optic ATM network of 820 km length. These enhancements increased the capabilities of tracking each incident by 63%, saved time by responding to them by 30% and decreased the time spent on journeys by 20%.
Visiting Al Barsha, the Dubai ITS Centre is one of the best classifications of traffic control centres in the world. Some of the major technologies on which it relies include artificial intelligence, big data, the IoT, over-advanced communication systems, as well as different monitoring devices to handle Dubai road networks. Prestasyong sentro hapag: It also oversees all traffic conditions and monitors and assists in the decision-making process through the technological “iTraffic” system that applies artificial intelligence together with big data analysis.
The following are some initiatives that exemplify RTA’s strategic direction: These measures are in line with Dubai’s strategy of embracing and deploying advanced technologies and integrated smart solutions for improving the emirate’s transport infrastructure and traffic management making Dubai a world city for intelligent transport systems.
