UAE Astronomer Captures ‘Giant Flames from Sun’ Amid Strongest Solar Storm

While the UAE may have missed the northern lights due to an ‘extreme’ solar storm hitting Earth, one UAE astronomer captured a rare celestial scene: the sun, which is as big as ten times of the earth’s diameter, has these giant flames burst from it, marking the beginning of the solar storm.

The head of the International Astronomy Centre (IAC), Mohammed Odeh, deemed it necessary to remind the world of the pictures of “the huge sunspot”, which resulted in the geomagnetic storm of the highest level to hit Earth in the last 20 years.

Sunspot and Solar Storm

  • This unique sunspot cluster is bigger than 17 times as wide as our planet producing multiple CMEs that can destroy our power grids and satellites in the near future.
  • Odeh took the picture of the sun from the Astronomical Seal Observatory of the IAC in Abu Dhabi.

Creation of Aurora Borealis

  • The past two days have been the days of four strong flares which created CMEs and move towards the Earth.
  • The emissions lead to the magnetic field’s disturbances, giving rise to the aurora borealis, when observed.

Aurora Borealis Sightings

  • The paramount example here is the northern Lights which were observed in the regions for the past several years, following the first flare at 8pm GMT (12am UAE time) on the previous night.
  • More flares will be hitting the planet, with the second emission being expected to arrive on Saturday at 11pm GMT, the third on Sunday at 10am, and the fourth on Sunday at 11 noon.

The amazing phenomenon of the northern lights in the northern regions of the Earth is the photographic evidence of the degree of the solar storm and the quality of the interaction of the Earth’s magnetic field with the solar wind.
