UAE Promotes Inclusion on World Autism Awareness Day

On April 2, World Autism Awareness Day will be commemorated in the UAE as it continues to endorse its efforts to create an inclusive environment for the people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The initiative emphasizes on the need of creating a supportive environment to allow the people with autism to lead a life full of joy and engage with the community.

This mission is spearheaded by the internationally accredited care and rehabilitation services of 522 autistic students that are provided by the Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO), Abu Dhabi. Tailing programmes in skill development, academic support and social integration are their programs.

When asked to comment on autism Aisha Al Mansoori, Director of the Abu Dhabi Autism Centre, emphasised the importance of early intervention and awareness so as to improve the life of people living with autism. Above all, she stressed, starting with raising awareness, particularly in schools, is the first step toward inclusion.

Al Mansoori told WAM that the earlier the intervention is provided the more accessible it is for the development of the student’s ability through education and improving their academic and social skills.

ZHO also offers individualized training plans and instructional workplace exposure for children with autism to achieve independence. Even on the international level, the organisation has expanded its Bridges of Hope programme to support families in Egypt through availing guidance to the parents and caregivers of people with autism and intellectual disabilities.

Continuing to lead the way in terms of autism awareness, acceptance and support, the UAE is taking such initiatives to request for support of autism.
