# Japan Visa for Dubai Residents: VFS Global Takes Over

Beginning August 1, VFS Global manages all Japan visa applications for Dubai residents — replacing the previous system where applicants booked appointments directly with the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai. The change covers both short-term and long-term paper visas, and e-visa services are set to resume through VFS Global in September. The standard processing time is approximately eight working days from submission.

What Changed in the Japan Visa Process

Previously, Dubai residents applying for a Japan visa had to book an appointment at the Consulate-General of Japan in Dubai. From August 1, the Consulate-General no longer accepts direct applications from ordinary passport holders. All applications must now go through VFS Global.

Diplomatic and official passport holders are the only exception — those visas continue to be processed through the consulate.

VFS Global is located at WAFI Mall, Level 2, Falcon Phase 2, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai. To book an appointment, visit visa.vfsglobal.com/are/en/jpn, create an account, and select an available slot. An appointment confirmation email is sent immediately after booking.

Japan E-Visa Service Resumes in September

E-visas for Japan were suspended in April 2024. Under the new arrangement, VFS Global will handle e-visa processing from September onwards. Tourists are still required to schedule appointments, but the process is expected to be more convenient than the previous direct-consulate system.

VFS Global is also establishing application centers in Abu Dhabi, expanding accessibility for residents across the UAE.

Japan Visa Fees for UAE Residents

Japan visa fees vary by nationality. Here is a breakdown of what applicants can expect to pay:

NationalitySingle EntryMultiple Entry
UK, US, RussiaNo feeNo fee
IndiaDh20Dh20
All other nationalitiesDh80Dh160

All applicants — regardless of nationality — must also pay a Dh100 VFS Global service fee, which includes 5% VAT.

UAE to Japan Flights and Tourism Demand

Interest in Japan travel from the UAE continues to climb. In 2023, Osaka experienced a 305% increase in search queries from UAE residents, while Tokyo recorded a 250% increase — underlining how popular Japan has become as a destination among Dubai-based travellers.

Emirates and Etihad both operate direct flights between Dubai and Japan. Average direct return fares cost approximately Dh4,600. Cheaper connecting-flight options are also available from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
