Dubai to Strengthen Beach Defences Against Climate Change with $96.7 Million Strategy

A new program aimed at the prevention of climate change in the beach areas of Dubai has been launched and it is to consist of the $96. 7 million expenditure. This endeavour will employ more than half a million cubic meters of sand to bolster natural barriers at Al Mamzar and Jumeirah 1 beaches in response to the risk posed by rising water levels.

Long live this sustainable development which was initiated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai and will take 18 months to complete. Prof. Gerd Masselink in the field of coastal geomorphology explained that the project used soft engineering, whereby the aim was to bring more sand to the beach than is taken away by the tides instead of erecting structures such as sea walls. This method which is common in areas such as Netherlands and Maldives mainly focuses on restoring the formation of sandy beaches to help curb coastal erosion in the best manner.

The plan is part of improvements on the beach districts, an initiative championed by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed, Deputy Prime Minister and First Deputy Ruler of Dubai. It extends over 5. 7km, with Al Mamzar and Jumeirah 1, out of which the latter has developed so much to cater with the increasing tourists, beach lovers, sport lovers and even night swimmers.

Some of features of the projects are seven night beach for swimming in Deira, the pedestrian walkway of 5km, the cycling and jogging tracks of 11km, the 200m floating bridge. And you can add 1,400 parking spaces with environmentally-sensitive charging ports, AI-based beach rescue capabilities, +100 security cameras to the list.

It is a clear social strategy of Dubai to develop all the beaches by 100%,improve public beach services by 400% and the night swimming beach lengths by 56%. The initiative aligns with the city’s Dubai Economic Agenda D33, Dubai Urban Plan 2040, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 pointing to the city’s intention of developing sustainable and resilient coastal cities.
