What To Know

  • The leadership invested oil money early into building a diversified economy — a visionary move that made Dubai one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.
  • While it looks like a marketing stunt, these cars actually help police patrol tourist-heavy areas and reach accident spots quickly on the city’s wide highways.
  • The famous man-made island shaped like a palm tree is so massive that astronauts have photographed it from space.

When people think of Dubai, they imagine glittering skyscrapers, luxury shopping malls, and the record-breaking Burj Khalifa. But beneath the glamorous surface, Dubai has many little-known stories and facts that make it even more fascinating.

1. Dubai’s Oil Story Is a Myth

Many assume Dubai became rich because of oil. In reality, less than 5% of Dubai’s GDP comes from oil today. Most of the city’s wealth is from real estate, trade, tourism, and financial services. The leadership invested oil money early into building a diversified economy — a visionary move that made Dubai one of the fastest-growing cities in the world.

2. No Street Addresses Until Recently

Until a few years ago, Dubai didn’t have street addresses like other global cities. Instead, residents would give directions such as “the white villa two streets behind the mosque.” Only in recent years did Dubai roll out its Makani number system, giving every building a unique code.

3. The City Once Had a Pearl Diving Economy

Before oil, Dubai’s economy relied heavily on pearl diving. Men would dive without oxygen tanks, holding their breath for up to two minutes while searching for oysters in the Arabian Gulf. This tradition continued until the 1930s when Japanese cultured pearls disrupted the industry.

4. Robots Race Camels in Dubai

Camel racing is one of Dubai’s oldest sports, but instead of human jockeys, today small robots ride the camels. This innovation solved past concerns around child jockeys and has now become a mix of tradition and technology.

5. Dubai’s Police Supercars Aren’t Just for Show

The Dubai Police fleet includes Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and even a Bugatti Veyron. While it looks like a marketing stunt, these cars actually help police patrol tourist-heavy areas and reach accident spots quickly on the city’s wide highways.

6. The Palm Jumeirah Can Be Seen From Space

The famous man-made island shaped like a palm tree is so massive that astronauts have photographed it from space. Built with over 120 million cubic meters of sand, the Palm Jumeirah is one of the most ambitious engineering projects ever attempted.

✨ From pearl divers to robot camel jockeys, Dubai is far more than just skyscrapers and luxury malls. It’s a city that constantly reinvents itself, mixing history with futuristic ideas in ways few other places can.
