The United Arab Emirates has announced that travellers unable to leave the country due to the recent airspace closure will not face visa overstay fines.

The decision was confirmed by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), which stated that all visa overstays resulting from the situation will be exempt from penalties.

According to the announcement, overstay fines will be waived for visas affected on or after February 28. The exemption applies to several visa categories, including:

  • Visit visas

  • Tourist visas

  • Exit permits

  • Residents who have cancelled their residency permits

The move aims to ensure that travellers who were unable to leave the country due to flight disruptions are not financially impacted by circumstances beyond their control.

Over the past several days, airports across the UAE experienced flight cancellations, delays, rescheduling and diversions, which prevented many travellers from departing the country as originally planned.

Authorities said the waiver reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting visitors and residents during exceptional circumstances while ensuring that their legal status remains secure.

Specialised teams are currently working across airports and Customer Happiness Centres to assist affected travellers. These teams are operating under emergency and business continuity plans and are coordinating closely with relevant authorities to address cases related to delayed or rescheduled flights.

Officials also emphasised that the UAE continues to prioritise the wellbeing and support of travellers within the country. Visitors and residents are encouraged to follow official government channels for the latest updates and regulatory announcements.
