Expansion and Technological Adoption
Due to authorities’ efforts to fully integrate ITS technology into the roads of Dubai, RTA aims to achieve its goal of adding ITS coverage to 100% of the city’s main roads by 2026. Total length of the network shall enhance from 480 km to 710 km. This will mean use of intelligent technologies and software such as Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) particularly cooperating ones (C-ITS) and putting into consideration benchmark cities.

The implementation of new Variable Message Signs (VMS) along with smart applications associated with the condition of the road will ease the personal mobility and enable self-driving transport technologies.
Technological Advancements
The first phase involved the installation of 116 traffic surveillance cameras, 100 incident and vehicle counting units, 112 Lane Usage Monitors, 115 travel time/speed average measuring devices, and 17 weather sensors. It also erected 660 km of electric power lines and established a fibre optic ATM network of 820 km length. These enhancements increased the capabilities of tracking each incident by 63%, saved time by responding to them by 30% and decreased the time spent on journeys by 20%.
