Dubai Airport (DXB) will only focus on international travel in the future, with all local flights relocating to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) as explained by Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO.
Attending the Arabian Travel Market, he said that once DWC is complete, DXB will stop functioning as an airport. Dubai South is home to Al Maktoum Airport, which is now being built and will rise in size to be around five times bigger than DXB.
In his view, it doesn’t make sense to have two big airports close to one another when they are only 70 kilometers apart. DWC is expected to go live when all the assets at DXB are reaching the end of their lifetimes. It is not possible for the government to invest such a large amount for the renovation of DXB.
This will be one of the biggest developments in air transportation for the city. It is anticipated that DWC will turn into a major global hub that will have high-quality technology, such as an underground train plan. After being operational, it will transform the city’s place in international aviation.
What becomes of the DXB site as soon as the transition takes place? No official redevelopment strategy has been shared yet, but Griffiths said that developers desire to utilize the land in another way. Sitting next to central Dubai, the present DXB site is regarded as valuable property.
Moving to Dubai South was said by the CEO to follow Dubai’s city expansion plan. The companies are now located very close to the border with Sharjah in the north. Paying more attention to development in this district may help the city become more level and limit the problem of congestion.
Basically, DXB will transform, whereas DWC will continue to represent Dubai’s main hub for air travel. It demonstrates the emirate’s plan for the future in aviation, smart infrastructures, and strong economic growth.
