Dubai Metro Unveils Smart AI Robot That Inspects Tracks While You Sleep

Dubai Metro has deployed a futuristic AI-powered robot to undertake inspection of rail tracks and infrastructure — without disturbing sleep or commute of passengers. Automated Rail Infrastructure Inspection System (ARIIS) is the most recent technology introduced by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai in cooperation with Keolis MHI and Future Maintenance Technologies (FMT).

ARIIS uses state-of-the-art lasers, LiDAR sensors, and 3D cameras to scan metro lines in real-time, providing real-time track safety and structural health without disrupting daily operations. This new-generation robot will independently identify the necessity of maintenance, which will make Dubai Metro safer, faster, and more efficient.

Abdul Mohsin Kalbat, the CEO of the Rail Agency of RTA, stated that the implementation of ARIIS is within the framework of the efforts of the city to ensure that Dubai Metro is one of the most modern transport systems across the globe. Dubai takes the pride of being a leader in smart solutions. ARIIS introduction is a step to the future of the way we maintain and future-proof our metro,” he stated.

The ARIIS advantages are stunning. Conventional inspections which used to consume 2,400 man-hours can be done in only 700, a 75 percent reduction in the time it takes to accomplish inspection. Predictive maintenance is also enhanced by the AI system, as well as improvement in safety and reduction of long-term infrastructure costs by up to 25 per cent.

David Franks, Keolis MHI Managing Director, said that ARIIS is a “game-changer”, whereas Loic Ayoul, FMT CEO, stressed that Dubai is a global transport innovation leader using AI.

As part of the Dubai Smart City vision and sustainability agenda, ARIIS is more than a maintenance tool to develop resilient and smart infrastructure.

With AI chefs preparing dinner in the city and drones flying above the streets, the new robot on the Dubai Metro is one more indicator that the future of transport has come officially — and it is moving on the rails of innovation.
