Qatar’s Climate Commitment: A Path to Global Sustainability

Qatar’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie noted the country’s commitment to an international cooperative effort to attain climate targets. While addressing the participants of the one-day event which was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute and the workshop “Rising to the Challenge of Climate Change,” Dr Al Subaie pointed out that this country has been investing in combating climate change for a long time.

Qatar’s history of involvement goes back over a quarter of a century, with the ratification of the UNFCCC in 1996 and hosting the COP18 event with international attendance. Also, Qatar assumed an important role, though successfully signing the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 as one of the ratifying countries.

The Minister also highlighted the level of activity that Qatar has shown locally and internationally. Internationally too, the country has set out strategies such as the National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change, the National Action Plan for Climate Change 2030, and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) in pursuit of curbing emissions and handling Climate Change consequences.

These measures are expected to support Qatar’s greater agenda of development as encapsulated in the Qatar National Vision 2030. Speaking of the importance of the given workshop, Dr. Al Subaie highlighted that it would create awareness of such challenges existing on the international level, as well as help in furthering the debates to improve the further negotiations; whereupon, the participant illustrated that Qatar is concerned with combating climate change on the international level.
