Qatar's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, H.E. Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, has reaffirmed the country's climate commitment to international cooperation in reaching global climate targets. Speaking at a one-day workshop titled "Rising to the Challenge of Climate Change," Dr Al Subaie underscored that Qatar has been actively investing in the fight against climate change for decades.
Qatar's Long History of Climate Engagement
Qatar's involvement in global climate action stretches back more than 25 years. The country ratified the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1996 and went on to host the landmark COP18 conference, drawing international participation. Qatar further cemented its climate commitment by signing and ratifying the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, joining the global coalition of nations pledging to limit temperature rise.
National Strategy and the 2030 Action Plan
Dr Al Subaie highlighted the breadth of Qatar's domestic climate policies. Key among them are the National Strategy for Environment and Climate Change, the National Action Plan for Climate Change 2030, and Qatar's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) submitted to the UNFCCC. Together, these frameworks guide the country's efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the consequences of a changing climate.
Qatar's NDC commits the country to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030, relative to a baseline where no new mitigation measures are introduced after 2019.
Linking Climate Goals to Qatar National Vision 2030
The minister emphasized that these climate measures are integral to Qatar's broader development agenda, as set out in the Qatar National Vision 2030. The vision places sustainable development at its core, making climate action inseparable from the country's long-term economic and social goals.
The Role of the Workshop
The event was organized by Qatar's Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in partnership with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). Dr Al Subaie stressed that the workshop would raise awareness of the challenges facing the international community and sharpen the quality of future climate negotiations — a signal that Qatar intends to remain an active voice on the global stage.
