Dubai’s RTA Explores Quantum Technology to Revolutionize Traffic and Transport

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai is considering the future applications of the glamorous quantum technology as a way of improving the traffic and transportation services with autonomous mobility and public transportation methods. The project represents the next step in the emirate aim to emerge as a global champion in the smart city development.

The RTA organised a recent workshop with the international leader in networking and cybersecurity Cisco with the title Quantum Communication and Its Applications in Smart Infrastructure. The panel gathered the technical experts of RTA and the industry professionals within the city and addressed how quantum solutions in Dubai could transform the mobility systems in the city.

Those three major areas are under consideration:

Quantum Communication: Photons are used to transmit data securely and allow the maximum amount of confidentiality as well as immediate awareness of attempted intrusion.

Quantum Computing: The ability to process large amounts of data and complex situations with lightning velocity, quantum computing could play a role in predicting traffic jams, scheduling autonomous vehicles and planning public transport.

Quantum Cybersecurity: Future-proof algorithms would support the RTA digitalised ecosystem against the threat of emerging cyber-attacks, providing strong and healthy networks on all transport processes.

The primary issues in which these technologies will address include traffic forecasting, intelligent infrastructure performance, and online security. In case it is implemented, they will result in less traffic jam, safer roads, more intelligent transport time planning as well as the higher user experience in case of the residents or visitors of Dubai.

The experiments in quantum tech have been fuelled by RTA, enabling Dubai more broadly to achieve the vision of becoming one of the smartest and most-connected cities with secure, seamless, and sustainable mobility.
