Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is exploring quantum technology as a tool to transform traffic management and transportation services — including autonomous mobility and public transit planning. The initiative marks a significant step in the emirate's ambition to become a global leader in smart city development.
RTA and Cisco Workshop on Quantum Infrastructure
The RTA organised a specialised scientific workshop in collaboration with Cisco, the global leader in networking and cybersecurity, titled "Quantum Communication and Its Applications in Smart Infrastructure." The event brought together RTA technical and engineering experts alongside industry professionals to examine how quantum solutions could reshape Dubai's mobility systems. The RTA is positioned among the first government entities in the region to formally explore quantum applications within the transport sector.
Three Core Domains Under Examination
Quantum Communication
Quantum communication uses photons to transmit data, delivering enhanced confidentiality and immediate detection of any unauthorised access attempts. For a transport authority managing city-wide connected infrastructure, this level of security is critical.
Quantum Computing
Quantum computing can process vast datasets and complex scenarios at exceptional speed. For the RTA, potential applications include predicting traffic congestion, scheduling autonomous vehicles, and optimising public transport route planning — all areas where conventional computing faces real limits.
Quantum Cybersecurity
Future-proof quantum algorithms would protect the RTA's digitalised ecosystem against evolving cyber threats, providing robust and resilient networks across all transport processes.
What It Means for Dubai's Roads
The primary challenges these technologies aim to address are traffic forecasting, intelligent infrastructure performance, and network security. If implemented, the outcomes could include fewer traffic jams, safer roads, smarter transport scheduling, and improved experiences for both Dubai residents and visitors.
The RTA's exploration of quantum technology supports Dubai's broader goal of becoming one of the world's most connected, secure, seamless, and sustainable smart cities.
