Zayed International Airport Reopens Northern Runway After Major Upgrades

Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi (AUH) has recommissioned its Northern Runway (13L/31R) after it undertaken rehabilitation work with the runway now active for both landing and take-off. There was increased technology changes on the runway with the focus on safety, sustainability, and operations.

The new abilities of the airport were created after the main rehabilitation work that comprised efforts aimed at strengthening and overlaying the resting area of the aircraft with the subsequent use of 210 thousand tonnes of asphalt to increase the sturdiness of the fragment. In addition to the upgrades of structure, the modern improvements that were implemented include the ground visibility monitoring and improved ILS for proper aircraft maneuvering. In addition to saving energy, over 1,200 of halogen airfield lights were changed to energy-efficient LED lighting underlining Abu Dhabi Airports’ commitment to responsible environment approach.

The Director General of the GCAA Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi said in a statement, “The successful accomplishment of this project is a testimony to Abu Dhabi’s commitment to embracing innovation and continually striving to advance the sustainability of growth in aviation, in line with the vision of the UAE.”

Elena Sorlini, Managing Director & CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports said that it would lead to enhancing the air traffic control & optimization of the operations. As the mentioned runway was closed it did not impact the airport’s operations as it had Southern Runway in its operation. At the same time the necessity of increasing passenger throughput makes the timely completion of the requisite upgrades crucial for ensuring both the safety and operational efficiency of Zayed International Airport.
