Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi (AUH) has successfully recommissioned its Northern Runway (13L/31R) following an extensive rehabilitation project — and the work was completed ahead of schedule. The runway is now fully operational for both landings and takeoffs, restoring dual-runway capacity at one of the UAE's busiest aviation hubs.
Rehabilitation Scope and Upgrades
The Northern Runway rehabilitation was a major infrastructure undertaking. The project involved reinforcing and resurfacing the aircraft parking area and runway surface using 210,000 tonnes of asphalt, significantly increasing the structural durability of the strip.
Beyond the structural work, a series of modern safety and sustainability enhancements were implemented:
- A new redundant ground visibility monitoring system for enhanced situational awareness - A cutting-edge Instrument Landing System (ILS) for improved operational precision during aircraft maneuvering - Replacement of Runway Visual Range (RVR) systems - Replacement of more than 1,200 halogen airfield lights with energy-efficient LED alternatives, underscoring Abu Dhabi Airports' commitment to environmental responsibility
Officials Cite Innovation and Planning
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, highlighted the broader significance of the project in a statement: "The successful completion of the North Runway Rehabilitation Project at Zayed International Airport reflects not only the strategic foresight of Abu Dhabi Airports but also the UAE's dedication to innovation and sustainable growth in the aviation sector."
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, credited the team's preparation and coordination for delivering the project early: "The successful completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project ahead of schedule is a direct result of meticulous planning, effective stakeholder collaboration, and a steadfast dedication to operational excellence."
Airport Operations Unaffected During Closure
Throughout the runway closure, Zayed International Airport maintained normal operations using its Southern Runway, ensuring passengers and airlines experienced no disruption. The timely reopening of the Northern Runway now enables the airport to meet growing airline demand through fully restored dual-runway operations — enhancing air traffic control capabilities and overall operational efficiency.
The completion of the Northern Runway rehabilitation marks another step in Abu Dhabi's continued investment in world-class aviation infrastructure, aligned with the UAE's long-term vision for sustainable growth in the sector.
