What To Know

  • The Global Future Councils 2024, which started from October 15-17, 2019 at Dubai, has constituted the prominent experts, the influential thought leaders, and the policymakers across the world more than 700 participants to talk about the concerning trends of the future and technologies that have the abilities to be significant such as Artificial Intelligence AI.
  • AI is referred to as a GPT in the sense that it can help in the performance of tasks in different professions rather than replacing people outright.
  • Stating that AI is going to lead a “staggering business change” in the upcoming ten years, policymakers need to think about the economic outcomes.

Speaking to the issue of job automation during the Global Future Councils conference in Dubai in 2024, Stanford University’s Dr. Erik Brynjolfsson argued that popular viewpoints on AI-related job displacement are misconceptions. He stressed that AI rather should be regarded as an assistant which helps workers with particular tasks and does not take a whole occupation. At a panel discussion dubbed “Keeping AI on Track” Dr. Brynjolfsson described AI as the most transformative technology since the Wattle steam engine and remarked on its capacity to bring change across the sectors that propel improvement.

AI is referred to as a GPT in the sense that it can help in the performance of tasks in different professions rather than replacing people outright. According to Dr. Brynjolfsson, business and governments should reimagine jobs so as to augment human capabilities. He said using the example of radiologists whose job demand increased by three times between 2016 and 2022, contrary to expectations that people would not be needed due to AI’s better image interpretation abilities.

“While artificial intelligence can be quite useful in understanding pictures, such as radiology, the radiologist has other roles, for instance, applying anesthetic agents where human involvement is more appreciated,” he highlighted. The data shown at the conference also showed that nearly 80% of US workers could find at least 10% of their tasks automated, with 19% being affected by more than 50% of their job by AI, including doctors and other highly-paid occupations.

Dr. Brynjolfsson also suggested that policymakers simply concentrate on making Artificial Intelligence to improve on human capital; this to remove the likelihood of making AI bring about greater unemployment. Stating that AI is going to lead a “staggering business change” in the upcoming ten years, policymakers need to think about the economic outcomes.
