Emirates, Dubai's flagship carrier, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Crypto.com to integrate cryptocurrency payments across its bookings and services. Announced on July 9, 2025, the agreement marks one of the most significant steps toward mainstream adoption of digital currencies in the global travel industry.
Emirates Crypto.com Partnership: What Was Agreed
The MoU was signed by Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, and Mohammed Al Hakim, President of Crypto.com's UAE operations. Under the deal, passengers will be able to pay for flights, seat upgrades, duty-free purchases, and other services using Crypto.com Pay.
Supported digital assets include Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Cronos (CRO), and stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. All crypto payments will be converted to UAE Dirhams (AED) at the point of transaction, protecting Emirates from price volatility.
Rollout Timeline and Scale
Integration is being phased: initial implementation is targeted for Q4 2025, with full-scale acceleration planned for 2026. Kazim said the initiative is designed to attract younger, tech-savvy travellers who prefer digital currencies and expect flexible payment options.
The two companies will also collaborate on promotional campaigns to drive awareness and user adoption once the service goes live.
Dubai's Crypto-Friendly Environment
The Emirates Airlines cryptocurrency payments move fits squarely within the UAE's broader digital asset strategy. Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) — the city's largest free zone — now hosts more than 650 crypto companies, reflecting strong institutional backing for the sector.
The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA), established in Dubai in 2022, oversees compliance across the virtual asset sector. Crypto.com itself received a limited licence from VARA in March 2025 to offer derivatives in the UAE, giving the partnership a solid regulatory foundation.
UAE Airlines Leading Aviation's Crypto Adoption
Emirates is not alone. Earlier in 2025, Air Arabia announced it would accept AE Coin — a UAE dirham-backed stablecoin — for flight bookings, signalling a regional trend toward crypto payment integration in aviation.
The Emirates and Crypto.com collaboration is expected to raise the airline's profile as a technology-forward carrier and may influence payment practices across the wider international airline industry as demand for alternative payment methods continues to grow.
