Dubai Launches AED1.4 Billion Stormwater Upgrade to Boost City’s Climate Resilience

The Tasreef system received four substantial stormwater infrastructure contracts from Dubai Municipality worth AED1.439 billion. The program represents an important advancement in Dubai’s efforts to develop infrastructure which will both address present climate challenges and serve future needs.

Contract awards encompass all major geographical segments of Dubai including Nad Al Hamar together with areas surrounding Dubai International Airport and Al Garhoud and Al Rashidiya as well as Al Quoz and Zabeel and Al Wasl and Jumeirah and Al Badaa. The new drainage lines extending for 36 kilometers will establish direct connections to the central Tasreef tunnel which will result in unified stormwater management for the entire emirate area.

The initiative aligns with Dubai’s mission to create a sustainable and habitable city as explained by Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita who serves as Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality. The Tasreef system applies world-class principles from urban planning and sustainability standards for its designs.

The overarching Tasreef initiative is projected to require a budget of AED30 billion to increase the drainage network’s capacity by 700% throughout the next hundred years. The Tasreef system extends stormwater system lifespan at the same time it reduces both construction and operational costs by 20%.

The project enables execution of key initiatives established by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai for strategic development and environmental sustainability in infrastructure.

The investments are vital at this juncture because Dubai is transforming itself into a leader in worldwide infrastructure readiness. The emirate strengthens its position as an innovative global authority through its enhanced ability to handle heavy rainfalls and surface water which additionally helps reduce climate-based risks.
