Dubai Municipality has awarded AED1.439 billion in contracts for four major projects under the Tasreef stormwater programme, marking a significant step in the emirate's push to build climate-resilient drainage infrastructure capable of serving the city for the next century.
Four Tasreef Contracts Covering Nine Areas
The newly awarded Tasreef stormwater contracts cover nine key areas across Dubai: Nad Al Hamar, the vicinity of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa.
The works will deliver more than 36 kilometres of new drainage lines that connect directly to the central Tasreef tunnel, creating a unified stormwater management network across the emirate.
Tasreef's Long-Term Vision
Eng. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Acting Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the Tasreef system applies world-class urban planning and sustainability standards, aligning with Dubai's mission to become one of the world's most liveable cities.
The broader Tasreef programme carries an estimated total investment of AED30 billion and is designed to increase Dubai's drainage network capacity by 700% over the next 100 years. The system's tunnel-based design is also projected to reduce construction, operation, and maintenance costs by 20% while extending the lifespan of the stormwater infrastructure.
Strategic Infrastructure Under Sheikh Mohammed's Direction
The Tasreef stormwater upgrade directly executes strategic directives issued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, for sustainable urban development and long-term environmental resilience.
The investments come at a critical time as Dubai continues to position itself as a global leader in infrastructure readiness — strengthening its capacity to manage heavy rainfall and surface water events while reducing climate-related risks to residents and businesses across the emirate.
