Dubai Police Confiscate Nearly 4,500 E-Scooters and Bicycles in Traffic Safety Crackdown

Dubai: Recently, Dubai Police have been increasing traffic enforcement measures in the entire Emirate to enhance the ad hoc mopeds’ safety for e-scooter, bicycles, and electric bicycles riders.

During the event, Assistant Commandant of Dubai Police Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi insisted on the multi-faceted mission of the participating department – road safety for all types and categories of road users.

Having said that, Al Ghaithi commented on the commitment of Dubai Police with regard to increasing traffic control operations as a key to improving road safety. “These efforts aim at this area and this [traffic laws and reckless driving] in order to achieve better traffic safety and fewer deaths. ”

Safety Concerns

It was Maj Gen Al Ghaithi who recognized the current upsurge in the usage of e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes although the usage of these devices in unauthorised zones or roads pose considerable hazards. To mitigate the increasing risks, Dubai Police are continuously running sensitization efforts to increase user security.

Accident Statistics

The statistics of the accidents that happen in June 2024 involved many e-scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes. The above-mentioned related accidents involved; four people killed, one seriously injured, 19 moderately injured, and five slightly injured. Further, more than 7800 violations and over 4500 scooters, bicycles and other prohibited means of transport were seized by the Dubai Police.

Major General Al Ghaithi elaborated on several traffic offenses with penalties including: operating Vehicles above the allowable speed of 60 km/h on designated roads, reckless riding, carrying passengers on e scooters and riding against traffic.

Safety Measures for Cyclists

In response to the situation, police highlighted the necessity to observe safety precautions as a bicycle rider. Some of the measures are to use lanes that have been set aside for motorcycles, wearing appropriate clothing or helmets, and not riding the motorcycles during night or during bad weather.

Adherence to Traffic Rules

The commandant of the GDBA Major General Al Ghaithi encouraged cyclists to exercise were possible and respect the traffic regulation for safety of ones own life and that of other road users.

Public Collaboration

The police also appealed to the community to assist in maintaining high standards in road safety. Calling the Police, DA Appoints Public Supplies, Police Eye, Shining A Light on Criminals Today, Citizens’ Security Observers, We Are All Police, and Dial 901.

Both the police and the community can make everybody traveling in Dubai bereft of criminals by jointly combating the menace.
