Dubai RTA Announces $189 Million Trade Centre Roundabout Transformation to Alleviate Traffic

Dubai: RTA awards AED 696m contract to reconstruct trade centre roundabout as part of its drive to transform one of the city’s most congested junctions into a ‘_smooth’ transit point. This project that is being implemented under the directions of the merchant ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is aimed at converting the roundabout to a high traffic interchange linking Sheikh Zayed Road with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Street, 2nd December Street, Zabeel Palace Street and Al Mustaqbal Street.

The development highlight key achievements to include; five new constructed bridges respectively spanning 5,000 meters. These will transform the existing round about to a surface intersection increasing it’s capacity by two times, decreasing average delay by 1000%, decreasing average delay from 12 minutes to 90 seconds, and decreasing the journey time from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed from 6 minutes to 1 minute.

As stated by the RTA’s Director-General Mattar Al Tayer these enhancements cover major facilities; the DWTC, and DIFC besides providing easy access top renowned neighbourhoods such as Zabeel, Al Satwa, Karama, Jafiliya, and Mankhool. This development will enhance the rating of that particular station and increase the overall carrying capacity and reduce overcrowding on this line benefiting over 500000 residents and visitors.

The existing bridge network is consisted of the upper level two lane 1000 meters long bridge connecting Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street with 3000 vehicles per hour capacity and the two 2000 meter long bridges connecting Sheikh Rashid street and 2nd December street with the collective 6000 vehicles per hour capacity. There are two more bridges; two lanes bridges Al Majles Street to 2nd December Street.

Parallel to the recently launched Al Khail Road Development, this plan will further connect with upgrades along Al Mustaqbal Street helping boost throughput right through the heart of Dubai and raising hourly capacity by approximately 20000.
