The announcement came following a meeting of the country’s moon-sighting committee, which includes religious scholars, astronomers and officials tasked with determining the start of Islamic months.

Ramadan completes 30 days this year

Authorities confirmed that Thursday will be the 30th and final day of Ramadan, as the crescent moon was not visible.

The decision aligns with Islamic tradition, where the start of Shawwal — the month that begins Eid — depends on the sighting of the new moon.

The call for moon sighting was earlier issued by the UAE Council for Fatwa, encouraging residents to participate in observing the crescent.

What Eid Al Fitr represents

Eid Al Fitr is one of the most important religious celebrations for Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan and is observed with:

  • Special morning prayers

  • Family gatherings and meals

  • Giving of gifts and charity

The festival reflects gratitude, unity and community spirit across the UAE.

Eid prayers to be held in mosques only

Authorities also confirmed that Eid prayers will take place inside mosques only, rather than in open-air prayer grounds.

This decision was coordinated by the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai and relevant authorities in other emirates, with the aim of ensuring safety and smooth organisation.

Worshippers have been advised to arrive early and follow official guidelines.

Long weekend confirmed across UAE

Residents across the United Arab Emirates will enjoy a long Eid break.

Both public and private sector holidays began on Thursday, March 19, with work set to resume on Monday, March 23, giving most residents a four-day weekend.
