Dubai Metro is celebrating its anniversary today for it has been 15 years since the first line of it was inaugurated on September 9, 2009; today, it has provided mass transit in the city as well as carried more than 2. 4 billion passengers. Initiated by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Metro has grown to be the life wire of the emirate’s transport system. The metropolitan system has 53 stations and covers 90 km while remaining the world’s longest fully automated or driverless metro with a 99. 7% on-time train performance. Through the construction of the metro, certain regions have been connected hence fostering development of economic aspects and making Dubai more competitive in the global market.
A few years ago, the number of daily passengers merely stood at 20,000 in 2009 but the current daily metro uses have reached 767,000 in the current year, flowing with the pace of the city’s growth. Mattar Al Tayer the Chairman of the RTA stated this saying that the metro has been instrumental in connecting major cities in the Emirate of Dubai while fostering environmentally friendly transport, decongesting traffic streams. The metro also creates job prospects for the citizens of Emirate with 228 employees under the operator.
The achievements of Dubai metro include the Green line launched in 2011, Route 2020 in 2020 and other developments in the Blue line which is expected to cover 30 km with 14 station connections. The system remains consistent in achieving records of safety, operational effectiveness while supporting the vision of Dubai as a global city in finance, business and tourism.
