Dubai Police is hosting the fourth INTERPOL Young Global Police Leaders Programme (YGPLP) from August 26 to 29, 2024, under the theme "Policing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence." The programme brings together young police leaders from 35 countries alongside INTERPOL speakers and trainers to explore how artificial intelligence is revolutionising industries and what these changes mean for security and policing worldwide.
Dubai Police Embraces AI-Driven Policing
The Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, affirmed that the force is committed to adopting strategies that are relevant to the future of policing. "Dubai Police has adopted a forward-thinking strategy to ensure that police operations are readied to handle future challenges, particularly those related to artificial intelligence," he said, adding that the programme "provides a global platform for these leaders to address present and future challenges, equipping them with the latest practices, technologies, and tools to advance global policing."
The YGPLP 2024 is designed to strengthen international cooperation and promote the exchange of best practices between participating countries, sharing knowledge on the effective use of technology — including AI — in policing processes.
Confronting AI-Enabled Crime
Major General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, highlighted a critical shift in the criminal landscape. With technology advancing rapidly, criminals have increasingly resorted to sophisticated cybercrimes and AI-related offences. "This shift requires a swift response, elevated readiness, and enhanced international collaboration to effectively tackle these challenges, particularly by empowering the younger generation who play a vital role in security and policing," he said.
Developing the Next Generation of Police Leaders
Brigadier Harib Al Shamsi, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police, underlined the programme's importance in developing next-generation police leaders. "The programme plays a key role in Dubai Police's efforts to enhance international cooperation among police forces worldwide, particularly in developing the skills of those involved in crime investigation and prevention," he said.
Sessions will include academic lectures, workshops, and structured discussions covering AI applications in policing, responsible AI usage, criminal exploitation of AI technologies, and community engagement around police AI practices. Participants will also focus on developing approaches to AI-era crime prevention, with teams presenting findings and recommendations — offering actionable insight to decision-makers shaping the future of world policing.
