Italian telecom giant TIM has chosen Abu Dhabi as the base for its new regional headquarters, cementing a partnership with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) to accelerate digital expansion across the Middle East, North Africa, and India.
Partnership Signed at Italy-UAE Business Forum
The agreement was formalised at the Italy-UAE Business Forum in Rome, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in attendance. TIM CEO Pietro Labriola and ADIO's Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi exchanged the agreement at the ceremony.
Under the partnership, TIM's Abu Dhabi headquarters will introduce the company's expertise in secure communications, cloud services, and IoT applications to enhance industrial productivity and strengthen the emirate's digital infrastructure.
TIM's IoT and AI Centre of Excellence in Abu Dhabi
A central pillar of the expansion is the creation of an IoT and artificial intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence. The centre will drive innovation across smart cities, smart homes, and smart energy solutions — sectors that sit at the heart of Abu Dhabi's economic diversification agenda.
TIM also plans to establish edge computing services in the emirate, enabling faster and more efficient data processing for IoT and entertainment applications.
Cybersecurity, Quantum, and 6G on the Agenda
Beyond IoT and AI, TIM's development roadmap includes cybersecurity capabilities, quantum communication infrastructure, and advanced telecommunications work in support of 5G and 6G network advancement. The company intends to forge academic partnerships and collaborate with investors and technology firms to build local digital talent and drive research in key sectors.
Why Abu Dhabi?
Pietro Labriola said that Abu Dhabi's world-class internet connectivity, strategic location, and innovation-driven ecosystem made it the ideal choice for the company's regional expansion. ADIO Director General Badr Al-Olama echoed that sentiment, stating that "TIM's arrival will lead to pioneering technological transformations in essential industries," adding that Abu Dhabi remains firmly committed to economic transformation and digital evolution.
