Pixar's Inside Out 2 has cemented its status as the summer's dominant force, topping the North American box office for a third consecutive weekend according to data from Exhibitor Relations. The animated sequel reclaimed the domestic crown it briefly ceded to the latest entry in the A Quiet Place horror franchise.
Inside Out 2 Box Office: $469 Million and Counting
Inside Out 2 earned $57.4 million over the weekend, lifting its domestic cumulative total to $469 million since opening on June 14. Analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research noted the achievement comes despite headwinds: the domestic box office was running roughly 8 percent below its pre-pandemic baseline in June.
The film follows teenager Riley as she navigates the emotional upheaval of high school, with new feelings — including Anxiety and Envy — joining the original cast of emotions. Amy Poehler and Phyllis Smith reprise their voice roles from the 2015 original.
A Quiet Place: Day One Opens to Franchise-Best $53 Million
Hot on its heels, Paramount's A Quiet Place: Day One debuted in second place with $53 million over its opening three days — the best debut in the franchise's history, topping both the original (2018) and A Quiet Place Part II (2021). Directed by Michael Sarnoski and starring Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong'o, the prequel is set during the first hours of an alien invasion in New York City. Critics and audiences received it somewhat less warmly than Part II, though the numbers remain impressive.
Gross noted that only 13 horror franchises have ever reached a fourth installment, and A Quiet Place is now firmly on track to join that list.
Horizon Misfires; Bad Boys Slides to Fourth
In third place, Kevin Costner's self-directed Western epic Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 opened to a disappointing $11 million for Warner Bros. The two-part saga has its second chapter scheduled for August release.
Will Smith's action comedy Bad Boys: Ride or Die dropped from second to fourth with $10.3 million, demonstrating audiences' continued willingness to embrace Smith following his 2022 Oscars controversy.
Kalki 2898 AD Makes History for Indian Cinema
Rounding out the top five, the Telugu science-fiction epic Kalki 2898 AD earned $5.5 million in fifth place — a significant milestone for Indian cinema in North American markets. Produced by Prathyangira Cinemas, it is the first chapter of a planned film series.
