Netflix has cancelled My Dad the Bounty Hunter after two seasons, ending the run of one of the streaming platform's most critically praised animated originals. Co-creator Everett Downing Jr. confirmed the news, saying the show would not continue despite its devoted audience and near-perfect critical reception.
Netflix Ends My Dad the Bounty Hunter After Season 2
The animated series, created by Everett Downing Jr. and Patrick Harpin, debuted on Netflix in February 2023 and returned for a second season in August 2023. That sophomore run earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making the cancellation a surprise to many fans and critics alike.
Downing addressed the decision directly, expressing pride in what the team accomplished: "I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to work with such an incredible team of partners and artists." He added that the characters will remain close to him, describing them as "living rent-free in my heart for the rest of my life."
What the Show Was About
My Dad the Bounty Hunter followed two children who stow away on their father's latest business trip, only to discover that their dad is actually the toughest intergalactic bounty hunter in the galaxy — a secret he had kept from his Earth-based family. The action-comedy blended family dynamics with sci-fi adventure, drawing comparisons to classic animated fare for its heartfelt storytelling.
The voice cast featured Laz Alonso and Yvonne Orji as the parents, with Priah Ferguson and JeCobi Swain voicing the children. The ensemble also included Yvette Nicole Brown, Rob Riggle, Jim Rash, Leslie Uggams, Chelsea Peretti, Keith David, and Tim Meadows.
A Perfect Score That Wasn't Enough
Season 2's 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes placed My Dad the Bounty Hunter in rare company among Netflix originals, yet critical acclaim proved insufficient to secure a renewal. The cancellation follows a pattern seen with several acclaimed animated series on the platform, which has faced criticism from fans for cutting shows before they can fully develop their audiences.
What Comes Next
Despite the cancellation, Everett Downing Jr. has not closed the door on the franchise. He stated that he hopes to return to the characters and their stories "someday," though no concrete plans are currently in place. For now, both seasons remain available to stream on Netflix.
