BTS, Madonna, and Shakira are officially co-headlining the first-ever FIFA World Cup 2026 halftime show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 19, 2026 — and it is already one of the most talked-about entertainment announcements of the year.
On May 14, 2026, FIFA and Global Citizen confirmed the lineup, making this the first halftime show of its kind in the tournament's 96-year history.
A FIFA First: The World Cup Gets Its Halftime Show
The Sunday, July 19 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium will mark the first time the FIFA World Cup has ever featured a halftime show. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previewed the concept at a World Cup event in March 2025, calling it "a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup and a show befitting the biggest sporting event in the world."
The announcement landed via a video curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. In it, Martin tells Sesame Street's Elmo about the significance of the performance. Elmo suggests Madonna, Cookie Monster suggests BTS, and Animal makes his feelings abundantly clear: "Animal want Shakira."
"Madonna, Shakira and BTS are global icons whose music transcends borders and generations," FIFA President Infantino said. "FIFA welcomes them to this inaugural event curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay."
BTS, Madonna, and Shakira: Three Acts, One Stage
The World Cup 2026 halftime show brings together three of music's most recognized acts across three decades — and their simultaneous presence on one stage is a genuine milestone.
Shakira has deep roots in World Cup culture. She recorded official tournament songs for both 2010 and 2014, and her 2026 World Cup track, "Dai Dai," is a collaboration with Afrobeats star Burna Boy. She also co-headlined the 2020 Super Bowl alongside Jennifer Lopez.
Madonna is set to release her new album "Confessions II" on July 3 — a follow-up to her Grammy-winning 2005 record "Confessions on a Dance Floor." She previously headlined the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show.
For BTS, the World Cup final is another milestone in a remarkable comeback year. The K-pop supergroup returned to the stage in March 2026 after a nearly four-year hiatus tied to mandatory South Korean military service and is currently in the midst of a global stadium tour. Member Jungkook previously performed at the 2022 World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar.
The Cause Behind the Concert
The World Cup 2026 halftime show carries purpose well beyond spectacle. Global Citizen produces the show in partnership with Live Nation and Done + Dusted, supporting the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund — a charitable initiative targeting $100 million to expand quality education and football access for children worldwide.
FIFA has confirmed that one dollar from every ticket sold to World Cup 2026 matches will be donated directly to the fund.
"Music is the universal language of hope and harmony, and we're honored to celebrate that power at the World Cup by connecting with millions of viewers around the world," BTS said in a statement.
What to Expect on July 19
The halftime show is scheduled for 11 minutes. Kickoff for the final is at 3 p.m. ET, with the performance expected to begin around 4 p.m. ET. FIFA has not yet confirmed whether the standard 15-minute international break will be extended to accommodate the show.
The 2026 World Cup is hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, beginning June 11. The expanded 48-team format makes it the largest tournament in the competition's history and the first time the United States has hosted since 1994.
With BTS, Madonna, and Shakira sharing the MetLife Stadium stage for the first time, July 19 is a date that extends far beyond football.
