Art Dubai 2026 is making history this May, and not in the way most people saw coming. For the first time in the fair’s 20-year run, entry is completely free, open to anyone who wants to show up. No ticket. No invitation. The special edition runs from May 15 to 17 at Madinat Jumeirah, with a VIP preview day on May 14, and the public programme is more packed than the format might suggest.
Why This Edition Is Different
This year’s Art Dubai is running as a “special edition,” a modified format put together after regional disruptions affected travel, shipping, and gallery participation. The fair, which typically welcomes around 120 exhibitors, has scaled back to more than 45 gallery presentations for 2026. Even so, the full programme adds up to more than 75 total presentations, covering commercial galleries, institutional participants, and cultural partners.
Benedetta Ghione, Executive Director of Art Dubai Group, addressed the shift directly: “Current circumstances mean that this may not be what we had planned to mark our 20th edition, but the galleries and wider programmes represent what makes Art Dubai both unique and special.”
The programme is condensed. The commitment is not.
What to Expect at Art Dubai 2026
The lineup spans contemporary, modern, and digital art, with galleries from nearly 20 countries. Close to 60 percent of exhibitors come from the Middle East and wider region. On the UAE side, participating galleries include Aisha Alabbar, Ayyam Gallery, Carbon 12, Dom Art Projects, Efie Gallery, Foundry, Gallery Isabelle, and Iris Projects, among others.
Large-scale installations and site-specific commissions are distributed throughout Madinat Jumeirah by artists Khalid Al Banna, Hashel Al Lamki, Ahmed and Rashid Bin Shabib, Rami Farook, Kevork Mourad, Yaw Owusu, Neda Razavipour, and Sudarshan Shetty.
A moving-image programme, co-curated with Alserkal Avenue, will screen at the fair and at Alserkal’s Al Quoz base. Additional programming comes through partnerships with Art Jameel, the Ministry of Culture, and House of Arts at Expo City Dubai. Daily talks, live performances, and screenings fill out the schedule, and the 20th edition of the Global Art Forum also runs as part of the event.
A New Financial Model for Exhibiting Galleries
One of the quieter but more significant decisions this year is a risk-sharing model for galleries. Booth costs will be payable based on each gallery’s sales performance, an approach Art Dubai previously used during the Covid-19 period. For galleries navigating an uncertain market, that flexibility is meaningful, and it may influence how future editions of the fair handle exhibitor relationships.
Who’s Behind Art Dubai 2026
The fair is held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Dubai Culture is the strategic partner. A.R.M. Holding is the presenting partner, with lifestyle developer HUNA also involved. Cultural institutions participating include the Barjeel Art Foundation, Dubai Collection, Sharjah Art Foundation, and the National Pavilion UAE.

Art Dubai 2026 is not the edition organizers originally planned. It came together under real regional pressure, with a smaller exhibitor count and a format the fair had to adapt on the fly. But it also happens to be the most publicly accessible version of Art Dubai in its entire history. Free entry, a strong regional showing, and a full programme at one of Dubai’s most iconic venues: this May has something genuinely worth showing up for.
