The Met Gala 2026 now has its theme, its date, and its star-studded co-chair lineup — and the Metropolitan Museum of Art is promising the most ambitious Costume Institute exhibition ever staged.
The event is set for May 4 in New York City, with the official dress code confirmed as "Fashion Is Art."
Andrew Bolton on the 2026 Met Gala Theme
Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton explained that the theme is designed to put a definitive end to the long-running "Is Fashion Art?" debate — placing fashion firmly within the artistic canon.
Speaking to the Associated Press, Bolton said the concept would help resolve that discussion once and for all, positioning fashion alongside painting, sculpture, and other recognized art forms.
As is tradition, the Met Gala dress code ties directly to the Costume Institute's annual exhibition, which serves as the creative anchor for the entire event.
'Costume Art' Exhibition: The Largest in Institute History
This year's exhibition is titled "Costume Art" and will explore fashion as a continuous, living thread throughout art history.
In terms of scale, it will be the largest exhibition the Costume Institute has ever mounted. The show will feature nearly 400 objects — including 200 garments paired with 200 artworks drawn from the museum's permanent collection across disciplines and eras.
Bolton described the exhibition as extraordinary in its ambition and scope.
Met Gala 2026 Co-Chairs
The 2026 Met Gala co-chairs are:
- Beyoncé - Nicole Kidman - Venus Williams - Anna Wintour
The host committee is chaired by Zoë Kravitz and includes Anthony Vaccarello, Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Lena Dunham, Misty Copeland, Angela Bassett, and Aimee Mullins.
While co-chairs and committee members help drive the event's profile, the full guest list remains closely guarded — as is Met Gala tradition. The gala continues to be one of the most exclusive fashion-meets-celebrity events in the world.
The Biggest Night in Fashion
Often described as fashion's equivalent of a championship event, the Met Gala blends couture, celebrity, and cultural commentary in a way no other occasion does. Designers typically use the red carpet to showcase bold interpretations of the annual theme, pushing creative boundaries well beyond traditional black-tie conventions.
With "Fashion Is Art" as the guiding concept, the 2026 Met Gala is expected to deliver highly interpretive, museum-worthy looks when the red carpet opens on May 4 in New York City.
As ever, the gala serves as the primary fundraiser for the Costume Institute — with spectacle and scholarship sharing equal billing on the night.
