Ethiopia officially launched the Arabic edition of Ye Medemer Mengist ("Medemer State") at a high-profile diplomatic ceremony in Abu Dhabi on May 14, 2026. The event, hosted by the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in the UAE, drew government ministers, ambassadors, business leaders, and members of the Ethiopian community for what Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula called a historic moment for Ethiopia-Arab relations.
A Major Diplomatic Milestone for Ethiopia and the UAE
The ceremony marked the first time PM Abiy Ahmed's signature political and philosophical work has been made available in Arabic — opening its vision of governance to millions of Arab-speaking readers across the Gulf and the wider Arab world.
H.E. Sheikh Shakhboot Nahyan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, attended the launch alongside H.E. Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, UAE Minister of Justice. Their presence underscored the depth of the UAE-Ethiopia bilateral relationship.
Sheikh Shakhboot emphasised "the importance of dialogue and cultural understanding among nations and peoples" and noted that UAE-Ethiopia relations remain on a strong footing.
What Is Ye Medemer Mengist?
Ye Medemer Mengist — translated as Medemer State — is a political and philosophical work authored by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. The book's central concept, Medemer (meaning "coming together" or "synergy" in Amharic), presents a governance framework built around unity, cooperation, collective progress, and national dialogue.
Ethiopian scholar Professor Adem Kamil offered an intellectual review of the work at the ceremony, highlighting its philosophical grounding in the idea that "collective effort, guided by shared values and inclusive institutions, generates outcomes far greater than the sum of individual parts."
Ambassador: Arabic Edition Will Clarify Ethiopia's Global Image
Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ethiopia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the UAE, said the translation serves a clear diplomatic purpose.
"The Medemer concept presents Ethiopia's approach toward cooperation with neighboring nations and global communities," he said, adding that the Arabic edition would "introduce Ethiopia's political and social philosophy to the wider Arab world."
In a separate interview with Fana Media Corporation, the Ambassador noted the translation would help Arabic speakers "gain a deeper understanding of Ethiopia's ongoing political, economic, and social transformation" — including Ethiopia's positions on regional matters such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the country's maritime access aspirations.
Ambassador Abdula described the Arabic edition as "a bridge — an invitation for Arabic-speaking readers" to engage directly with Ethiopia's vision for its future.
Ethiopian Cultural Night Caps the Ceremony
Beyond the book launch, the evening featured an Ethiopian Cultural Night showcasing traditional music, dance performances, and authentic Ethiopian cuisine. The cultural programme highlighted Ethiopia's rich heritage and reinforced the event's broader message: that Ethiopia's story — its history, culture, and global ambitions — deserves a wider audience in the Arab world.
Hollywood publicist and celebrity branding strategist Sheeraz Hasan was among the VIP guests. Conversations at the event touched on introducing Ethiopia's tourism potential, cultural assets, and national image to entertainment and international media audiences.
Strengthening a Growing Partnership
The launch reflects a broader effort by Ethiopia to deepen its ties with the UAE and the Arab world at a time when Gulf states are increasingly important partners for East African nations. The Arabic edition of Ye Medemer Mengist positions Ethiopia's governance philosophy not just as a domestic framework, but as a contribution to regional and global dialogue on cooperation and collective development.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the partnership, with Sheikh Shakhboot noting that the UAE-Ethiopia relationship "remains strong during difficult periods."
