DXB has earned the title of the world's busiest international airport for the second consecutive year, covering inbound, outbound, and transfer passengers. According to global travel data company OAG, Dubai International Airport recorded 60.2 million international seats in 2024 — cementing its place as the world's most important international hub.
A Consistent Global Leader
The 2024 result marks the tenth consecutive year that DXB has topped ACI's busiest international airport rankings since 2014. Overall seat capacity grew from around 47.4 million in 2023 to 60.2 million in 2024, reflecting 7% growth in passenger traffic year-on-year.
When both international and domestic connections are counted, DXB ranks second globally, narrowly behind Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airport which reported a combined capacity of 62.7 million seats. On the international-only table, London Heathrow Airport (LHR) follows in second place at 48.4 million seats, while Seoul Incheon International Airport moved up four places to take third at 41.6 million seats.
Beyond scheduled seat capacity, the airport welcomed a record 92.3 million guests in 2024 — surpassing its previous all-time high of 89.1 million set in 2018.
What Has Driven DXB's Success
Dubai's position as a premier tourism destination, its state-of-the-art facilities, and the city's unique demographic profile all contribute to the airport's dominance. With approximately 88% of Dubai's population made up of expatriates, DXB serves a critical function connecting residents with their home countries and workplaces around the world.
The airport operates flights to 272 destinations across 107 countries, with 106 international airlines operating routes through the hub. TripAdvisor has also consistently ranked Dubai among the world's top three travel destinations, driving further demand for international connections.
Record-Breaking Air Traffic
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority projected one million aircraft movements in 2024, underlining the scale of the country's expanding aviation sector. DXB recorded 440,300 total flight movements — a 5.7% increase on the prior year — while cargo operations reached 2.2 million tonnes handled, up 20.5% from 2023.
Operationally, 98.2% of passengers cleared departure passport control in under 10 minutes, and 99.2% completed security screening in under 5 minutes.
A Bright Future for DXB
With Dubai projected to reach 100 million annual passengers by 2027, DXB shows no sign of relinquishing its global lead. The airport continues investing in contactless technology and first-class facilities to maintain its competitive edge as both passenger volumes and cargo demand keep rising.
