France's Leon Marchand delivered a masterclass in the 400m individual medley at the Paris Olympics 2024, clocking 4:02.95 to break Michael Phelps' long-standing Olympic record and claim gold in front of a thunderous home crowd at La Defense Arena on July 28, 2024.
An Olympic Record in Front of 15,000 Home Fans
Marchand was dominant from the opening stroke. He surged ahead of the field immediately and never relinquished his lead, finishing 5.67 seconds clear of silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita of Japan. The 15,000 fans packed into La Defense Arena created an electric atmosphere, chanting "Allez!" with each breath during the breaststroke leg — a moment Marchand later described as "insane."
His time of 4:02.95 eclipsed Phelps' Olympic record, though it narrowly missed Marchand's own world record of 4:02.50, set at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka. For a swimmer who had dominated world-level competition, the Paris gold was the crowning achievement — his first Olympic individual gold medal.
Matsushita Takes Silver, Foster Earns Bronze
Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita claimed silver with a time of 4:08.62, edging out American Carson Foster, who touched the wall just 0.04 seconds later in 4:08.66 to take bronze. Great Britain's Max Litchfield finished fourth. Notably, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Chase Kalisz of the United States did not qualify for the final.
Marchand's Moment of Triumph
As Marchand touched the wall and looked up at the scoreboard, La Defense Arena erupted. He gestured to embrace the crowd, soaking in the support of the French faithful. The victory cemented his status as the face of French swimming — and arguably world swimming — heading into the next Olympic cycle.
The win in the 400m individual medley, one of his strongest events, set the tone for what would become a historic Paris Games for Marchand.
