The CEO of Naughty Dog – Neil Druckmann revealed his vision of the future of videogame industry and more specifically the role that he foresees that artificial intelligence (AI) will have into the near future. When speaking about modern trends in the industry, Druckmann called the revolutionizing ability of AI in the future of game development as it brings demand for development costs down, makes more elaborate projects viable, and enhances the quality of narratives.
Strikingly, during a keynote address where Druckmann discussed a host of issues related to the movie’s production and promotion, he stressed that the coronavirus pandemic was disruptive but forced filmmakers to discover better ways of working, citing home-based motion-capture and real-time collaboration as examples of AI tools that make filming more efficient and spur creativity. He also criticized Sony that it has come up with new gadgets, better and new tools such an auto engine to design environment better to make games much more enjoyable and real.
However, in the recent past there are voices pointing to a number of aspects of it which have caused negative feelings or ethical issues in their application, even if Druckmann still looks at it positively and emphasized that the responsible management of AI technologies must be addressed. He encouraged developers to consider fundamentals as more vital than specifically tools on account of the fact that AI provides new opportunities but can only do so if correctly directed for the best results.
AI will hence revolutionalise game production’s economics because it will eliminate cost and technical barriers, enabling developers to bring new ideas into reality and create more elaborate narratives. However, to consolidate on this change, Druckmann rightly uses the call to ethical management by putting into consideration on how to make these changes in a way that will benefit more out of artificial intelligence without resulting into job losses etc.
