# UAE Drone Navigation Rules Set as Operations to Double
The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has introduced the region's first drone air navigation service provider certification policy. The GCAA launched the new rules — called CAR Airspace Part Uspace — in anticipation of UAE drone operations doubling in the coming years, driven by rapid advances in autonomous aerial systems.
What CAR Airspace Part Uspace Covers
Organisations seeking to provide drone air navigation services in the UAE must now comply with a comprehensive set of operational and safety standards under the new regulation. The framework addresses every critical aspect of certification, including:
- Contracting and certification — verifying that providers maintain proper licences through formal procedures. - Training and quality assurance — ensuring providers meet safety requirements and professional standards. - Auditing and future planning — establishing oversight mechanisms and preparing the industry for expansion. - National integration — embedding drone technology into the UAE's broader aviation network for secure, efficient nationwide operations.
What UAE Officials Said
GCAA Director-General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi emphasised the significance of the new certification rules: "This regulation is not just about compliance; it is a testament to our commitment to safety, efficiency, and innovation in aviation."
Aqeel Ahmed Al Zarouni, Assistant Director-General of Aviation Safety Affairs, added that the regulation is "key to safely integrating advanced drone technologies into UAE airspace." He noted that clear certification standards ensure high safety levels and professional industry growth, while strengthening the UAE's standing as a regional leader in aviation innovation.
The Future of Drone Operations in the UAE
The rapid growth of unmanned aircraft systems has driven exponential demand for managed drone airspace. The UAE's new drone navigation rules target three core objectives:
- Enhance safety and efficiency across all drone operations. - Support industry growth by establishing professional benchmarks. - Cement the UAE's position as a leader in aviation innovation.
The CAR Airspace Part Uspace framework is modelled on European Union U-space concepts and is expected to guide the development of air mobility across the UAE. Sectors including logistics, security, and smart city development — all of which rely heavily on drones — stand to benefit most as the industry scales.
