Abu Dhabi hotel guests could soon skip the front-desk queue entirely. Hotels across the emirate are rolling out a facial recognition check-in system — the first government-led biometric initiative in the UAE's hospitality sector — developed jointly by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
How the Facial Recognition Check-In System Works
The system captures biometric data at check-in, securely encrypts it, and cross-references it against ICP's identity databases. All data handling operates under UAE data privacy regulations, with the centralised database managed by DCT Abu Dhabi exclusively for guest safety and operational efficiency — not for any other purpose.
Hotel staff receive dedicated training and operational support to ensure smooth integration and consistent service quality from day one.
Pilot Launch at Five-Star Hotels
The Abu Dhabi hotel facial recognition pilot launched across five-star properties in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain Region, and Al Dhafra Region. The initiative was unveiled at the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) 2025, marking a significant milestone in the emirate's push to modernise its hospitality infrastructure.
The system reduces front-desk waiting times, improves operational safety, and boosts overall efficiency — benefits that align directly with Abu Dhabi's ambition to be recognised globally as one of the world's safest and most advanced travel destinations.
Emirate-Wide Rollout Planned
The rollout follows a phased approach. After the five-star pilot, the programme expands to four-star hotels, before eventually covering every hotel category across the emirate. This gradual expansion allows operators time to train staff and integrate the technology without disrupting existing guest services.
The initiative reflects Abu Dhabi's broader strategy of harnessing innovation to enhance the visitor experience — reinforcing the emirate's reputation as a forward-thinking destination on the global stage.
