The World Governments Summit 2026 convened in Dubai from February 3 to 5, drawing delegates from across the globe to address the defining governance challenges of the era. Ambassador Theon Ali, Deputy Head of Mission to the UAE, was among those at the centre of the action — representing Antigua and Barbuda's push for climate-resilient, sustainable tourism development.
The Antigua and Barbuda delegation was led by Prime Minister Gaston Browne and The Honourable Maria Browne, and included H.E. Ambassador Theon Ali, H.E. Ruleta Camacho-Thomas, and H.E. Armand Arton. Their primary objectives centred on securing financing for renewable energy and sustainable transport connectivity, reinforcing the nation's ambition to become a leading climate-resilient tourism destination.
Prime Minister Browne Sets the Agenda
Speaking during the Tourism Roundtable on the Future of Tourism, Prime Minister Gaston Browne opened with a clear directive: shift from volume-driven arrivals to premium, sustainability-focused experiences. That mandate framed every bilateral meeting Ambassador Theon Ali would conduct over the three days.
Renewable Energy Talks with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development
In discussions with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Ambassador Theon Ali explored potential support for renewable energy expansion in Antigua and Barbuda. The goal, according to delegation officials, is to improve energy stability for resorts and heritage sites — reducing outages and service downtime that can undermine the visitor experience and deter high-value travellers.
Digital Tourism and High-Value Traveller Strategy
Ambassador Theon Ali also met with tourism and technology stakeholders to discuss digital platforms for reservations and bookings, alongside targeted marketing campaigns aimed at attracting affluent travellers to Antigua and Barbuda. These conversations reflect the broader shift toward a premium, technology-enabled tourism model the government is actively pursuing.
Next Steps: Aviation and Tourism District Development
The delegation is now coordinating technical consultations on tourism district development and advancing aviation discussions with UAE counterparts. Cultural and tourism authorities on both sides are expected to continue talks in the coming months, building on the foundation laid at WGS 2026.
Ambassador Theon Ali described the UAE as a critical partner in Antigua and Barbuda's strategy to build a tourism economy rooted in sustainability and climate adaptation — priorities reinforced throughout the summit and central to the island nation's long-term development vision.
