Dubai medical tourism hit a new milestone in 2023, with the emirate hosting more than 691,000 international medical tourists — a figure that underscores the city's growing status as a premier global healthcare destination, according to a report published by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA).
Record Numbers for Dubai Medical Tourism in 2023
The 691,000 international visitors who sought medical care in Dubai in 2023 represent a clear rise from 2022, when 674,000 medical tourists visited the emirate. Direct healthcare spending by these patients exceeded AED 1.03 billion, up from AED 992 million the previous year.
Indirect revenues linked to health tourism climbed even higher, reaching AED 2.3 billion — benefiting Dubai's hospitality, transport, and retail sectors alongside the healthcare industry itself.
Who Are Dubai's Medical Tourists?
The DHA data reveals a notably female skew: 58% of health tourists were women, compared to 42% men. Asia led all source regions at 33%, followed by GCC countries at 28% and Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States at 23%.
Treatment preferences varied by geography. Asian patients sought dermatology and gynaecology services most frequently, while GCC visitors prioritised dental care and orthopaedic procedures.
Most Popular Medical Specialties
Dentistry topped the list of specialties, accounting for 29% of demand. Dermatology followed at 27%, with gynaecology third at 13%. The combination of internationally accredited clinics, competitive pricing, and short waiting times continues to draw patients across these disciplines.
DHA and Dubai's Healthcare Vision
His Excellency Awadh Seghayer Al Ketbi, Director General of the DHA, said the rising number of international patients reflects deep confidence in Dubai's healthcare standards. "The increase of the number of clients from other countries is evidence of the confidence people have in the Dubai healthcare industry," he stated.
The DHA has maintained close collaboration with private healthcare providers to ensure the emirate's medical infrastructure keeps pace with rising global demand. Private hospitals and clinics have played a central role, expanding capacity and launching patient-friendly programmes that ease the experience for international visitors.
Alignment with Dubai Economic Agenda D33
The growth of Dubai's health tourism sector is a deliberate policy outcome. The Dubai Economic Agenda D33 — the emirate's blueprint for doubling the economy by 2033 — identifies health tourism as a priority vertical. Attracting high-value medical visitors generates direct revenue while reinforcing Dubai's broader positioning as a world-class destination for business and leisure.
With nearly 700,000 international medical tourists in a single year, Dubai is clearly on course to become one of the world's foremost health tourism hubs, offering specialised care from leading practitioners at globally competitive standards.
