Dubai International Airport (DXB) is heading for one of its strongest years on record. Through the first nine months of 2024 the airport handled 68.6 million passengers — a 6.3% increase on the same period in 2023 — and projects a full-year total of approximately 91.8 million, which would surpass all previous annual highs.
Passenger Trends and Top Destination Markets
India remained the single biggest destination market, with 8.9 million passengers in the nine-month period. Saudi Arabia ranked second at 5.6 million travelers, a strong 15.2% year-on-year jump, while the United Kingdom came third at 4.6 million (up 4.7%). Pakistan and the United States followed with 3.4 million and 2.6 million respectively, with Germany contributing a further 2 million.
At the city level, London held the top spot with 2.9 million passengers. Riyadh posted the most impressive growth — up 25.8% to 2.3 million — while Mumbai (1.8 million), Jeddah (1.7 million) and New Delhi (1.6 million) rounded out the leading city routes.
Operational Excellence at DXB
DXB handled 327,700 flight movements between January and September 2024, representing a 6.4% increase on the prior year. Baggage performance remained exceptional: the airport processed 60.1 million bags at a 99.3% handling accuracy rate, with 92% of arriving luggage for terminating passengers delivered within 45 minutes.
Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Airports, highlighted the airport's continued strength:
> "DXB has again showcased its resilience as an outstanding global connector, powered by our mission to deliver guests with the finest experience facilitated by technology and acclaimed hospitality."
Winter Surge and Q4 Outlook
DXB expects to welcome roughly 23.3 million passengers during the final quarter of 2024, fuelled by end-of-year holiday travel, business trips, and a packed sporting calendar. Key events drawing visitors to Dubai this winter include the DP World Tour Championship, the Emirates Dubai 7s rugby tournament, and the New Year celebrations.
Combined with the 68.6 million already recorded through September, the airport's full-year projection of approximately 91.8 million passengers would mark a landmark achievement — cementing DXB's position as the world's busiest international airport for another consecutive year.
