Dubai's long-held vision of urban air mobility is edging closer to take-off. Commercial electric air taxi services are expected to launch before the end of 2026, according to the emirate's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) — and a landmark test flight has confirmed the city is ready.
Joby Aviation Completes Historic eVTOL Test Flight in Dubai
The announcement followed the successful crewed test flight of a fully electric air taxi developed by Joby Aviation, marking a major milestone in Dubai's plans to integrate aerial transport into its wider mobility network.
The test flight — conducted in June 2025 — was the first public demonstration of Joby Aviation's electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Dubai. Operated under the supervision of local aviation and transport authorities, the flight assessed the aircraft's performance in real-world conditions, including climate, airspace integration, and safety protocols.
Officials said the successful trial confirmed the aircraft's suitability for commercial operations within Dubai's urban environment and highlighted the city's preparedness to adopt next-generation transport technologies.
What the RTA Said
The announcement was made by Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority, who described the trial as a critical step toward operational readiness and the future of smart transportation in the city.
Al Tayer noted that the test flight underscored Dubai's ambition to lead globally in smart and sustainable transport, adding that aerial mobility will play a complementary role alongside existing public transport systems.
The move aligns with Dubai's broader strategy to reduce road congestion, improve connectivity, and promote sustainable mobility, while maintaining rigorous safety and regulatory standards.
What the Dubai Air Taxi Can Do
Joby Aviation's eVTOL aircraft is designed for short- to medium-distance travel and offers a compelling alternative to ground transport for time-sensitive journeys across the city.
Key capabilities include:
- A range of up to 160 kilometres - Top speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour - Zero operating emissions - Ultra-quiet flight, suitable for dense urban areas
The aircraft's low noise footprint has been cited as a crucial factor in enabling widespread adoption within city limits, particularly in residential and commercial districts.
Initial Routes and Vertiport Locations
Once commercial operations begin, Dubai air taxis are expected to operate on select routes connecting key business districts, residential areas, and major transport hubs, offering rapid point-to-point travel. Confirmed vertiport locations include Dubai International Airport, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina, DIFC, and the Dubai Mall.
A trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah — which takes approximately 45 minutes by car — is expected to take around 10 minutes by air taxi.
Authorities indicated that route expansion will follow as infrastructure matures and regulatory frameworks evolve. Dedicated vertiports, integrated air traffic systems, and digital booking platforms are all part of the phased rollout, with infrastructure partners including Emaar Properties, Atlantis The Royal, and Wasl Asset Management Group.
Joby Aviation's Six-Year Exclusive Agreement
Joby Aviation's progress in Dubai follows a six-year exclusive operating agreement, signed in early 2024, granting the California-based company the rights to deploy and operate commercial air taxi services in the emirate.
Under the agreement, Joby is responsible for:
- Aircraft deployment and fleet operations - Pilot training and certification - Vertiport development and readiness - Integration with Dubai's existing transport and air traffic systems
Commercial services are expected to begin subject to final regulatory approvals, including safety certification, operational testing, and passenger readiness assessments.
Dubai Positions Itself as a Global First Mover
Once operational, Dubai will join a small group of global cities offering certified electric air taxi services, reinforcing its reputation as an early adopter of advanced aviation and mobility technologies.
For the aviation industry, the programme represents a significant step toward the commercialisation of electric vertical flight, bringing the concept of urban air taxis closer to mainstream reality.
As Dubai continues to reimagine how people move through cities, the countdown to flying taxis has officially begun.
